As part of its contribution to quality education in the country more especially in the provincial areas, Help a Needy Child in Sierra Leone (HANCI-SL), a non-governmental organization on Saturday 30th October, 2010 donated sporting equipments and assorted educational materials worth Le 40 million (Forty Million Leones) to eight schools in both the primary and secondary categories in Bo city.

At the ceremony held at their Centre in Bo, HANCI’s operation director Madam Ramatu Kargbo informed the gathering that the donation was co-funded by Comic Relief, a humanitarian organization based in the United Kingdom and other partners.  She said it was the pilot phase of a project aimed at improving access to basic education and skills training, adding that they also work with street boys and girls to promote the culture of discipline and positive reinforcement of children’s learning that attracts them to schooling. She however, stressed that the donation could only be replicated to other schools if the beneficiaries handle the items with care and do well in all public exams.

“This gesture is also in consonance with my organization’s focus to promote and protect the rights of children, especially the right to education which is fundamental to their development,” Madam Kargbo noted, while underscoring the importance of the donations, particularly the football kits as football fosters group bonding. “Playing help children work as a team to succeed, and above all to be disciplined,” she asserted.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children Affairs, Mr. Sahr Tejan said HANCI is not only complementing government’s efforts in achieving quality education but also contributing immensely to tackle security vulnerability of the country by removing and schooling street kids and teen mothers in that part of the country. He beseeched school authorities to make use of the donated items to achieve their intended purpose.

In his short thank you statement, community representative Chief Gibril Lahai said education is the key to un-lock modernization, and that HANCI being a child focused organization is in no small way responding to the call for improvement in education. He admonished educational stakeholders to help monitor the teachers and the beneficiaries to judiciously use the items donated to them and their schools. To Kids’ Clubs in the various schools, he urged them to do what was expected of them and to be committed to their education.

Also in an expression of appreciation on behalf of the beneficiary schools and children, the President of the Children’s Forum Network, Edmond Fornah said HANCI is among the top non-governmental organizations that are building brighter future for deprived kids in the country. He said for the past several years the NGO has been providing children with useful learning materials and small business support for parents. He also ended on the note that colleagues must make use of the opportunity and to know that there were others in dire need of such gestures. .

The
donated items comprised sporting gears, text books on the four core subjects for JSS, furniture, visual aids (globes, maps and atlases) and writing materials.
