Guinean Soldiers Visits Sierra Leone

 

A high power delegation of Guinean Soldiers recently crossed over to Kambia Town, Northern Sierra Leone. According to reports, the main purpose of their visit was to discuss security matters with their Sierra Leonean counterparts along the border on the pending run-off elections. The delegation which was led by one Col. Bangali Condeh was given a befitting welcome.


Sierra Leone to Host Religious and Peace Conference

 

The West African Resource Association/ West Africa Research Center also known as WARA/ WARC Peace Initiative is planning to organize an international peace conference at the Taia Resort Hotel in Freetown from 11th-15 December 2010. The purpose of the conference is to investigate the relationship between faith and communities in order for peace to prevail. Participants had been reportedly drawn from research scholars who had already submitted their researched papers from the sub- region of West Africa. The theme of the conference is ‘Religion and ‘Peace.

 

Information Minister Warns Against Child Exploitation


The Minister of Information and Communication Alhaji I B Kargbo has reportedly warned the public against child exploitation. According to reports, some parents and guardians are in the habit of subjecting their children and wards to hard labour, early marriage and street trading. Mr. I.B. Kargbo is reported to have made this pronouncement at the SLAJ Office last Friday during a one-day advocacy workshop on the theme: “Promote Children’s Rights to Protect Their Future”. The Minister reportedly emphasized that his government was highly committed to child protection and would take drastic action against anybody involves in such


NEC Declares Bye –Elections

 

The Chief Electoral Commissioner of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) Dr. Christiana Thorpe has reportedly declared the conduct of bye-elections for Kono, Kambia and Tonkolili District on December 11, 2010. According to the Commissioner they have received correspondence from the former Chairman of Kono District Council, the Chief Administrators of Tonkolili and Kambia District Councils indicating that certain seats in their respective councils are vacant. Reports further revealed that, Paramount Chieftaincy elections in the Koinadug, Kambia and Kailahun Districts have been slated for 13th 15th and 17th December respectively.


ECOWAS Peace Pageants Arrive


Local tabloids say thirty contestants, two from each of the 15 ECOWAS States
are currently in Freetown to participate in the ECOWAS Peace Pageant slated for Saturday 13th November 2010 at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown. Reports say the winner of the contest would  be the ECOWAS Peace Ambassador and would be charged with the responsibility of preaching Peace in the sub-region of West Africa. This is the very first time Sierra Leone is hosting the Peace Pageant.


Victoria Park Declared No Go Area

Reports have  alleged that the Freetown City Council recently declared the Victoria Park a no go area and has order foreigners to take over the venue. According to reports, foreigners from Azerbaijan are currently in Freetown to commence a rehabilitation work in the Park under the command of the FCC. There are plans to rehabilitate the Park to an international standard.

PMDC Expels Chairman and 1 MP

It has been alleged that the People’s Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) over the weekend expelled its suspended chairmen, Mohamed Bangura and the Member of Parliament for constituency 69 Hon. Legacy Sankoh representing PMDC in Bo District. The duo were reportedly expelled  for  publicly expressing their loyalties for other political parties.
