In Sierra Leone, Airtel replaces Zain with more improvements

Zain subscribers in both Sierra Leone and 16 other African countries covered by the mobile company on Friday 20th November 2010 bade farewell to Zain to happily embrace Airtel that has replaced the former.

In Sierra Leone, the changing over ceremony was held at the Miatta Conference Hall in Freetown and was attended by important personalities including representatives from various government departments, parastatals, members of the business community, subscriber as well as pressmen.


The Managing Director, Rajvardhan Singh Bhollar explained that Airtel was formally being simultaneously launched as a new mobile brand across all Zain operational areas in Africa. All Bharti Airtel operational 19 countries in Asia and Africa today launch the Airtel brand together, including Sierra Leone, Mr. Bhollar informed. He said the changing of Zain brand to Airtel is well planned and is going to be synonymous with many benefits including the improvement on rural communities, school projects, increase in employment and many other unique innovations with potential to give freedom and power to subscribers. The qualities are reflected in Airtel brand personality of being brave and bold, sensitive and empathic, he maintained.

Zain Changes to Airtel

To make the ceremony so auspicious, the Commercial Director of Airtel Keith Tukei launched a new product called Ultra low cost hand set package which effectively provides a mobile phone free of charge to all new subscribers. The package was launched together with a new Nokia price as low as Le149,000 with a free SIM card with many facilities.


Mr. Keith Tukei assured of the positive nature of the change of brand from Zain to Airtel, emphasizing that it is aimed at bringing more opportunities to Sierra Leoneans to join the world of communication. He said through the Airtel affordable innovative, rural school improvements and the promotion of music and other corporate social responsibilities, over 60% of the African population will have freedom to communication and achieve the global goal.


According to him, the re-branding is going to be reflected not only in change or brand quality but also in product. For example the Zap product is going to be re-branded as Airtel money with immediate effect and Airtel is going to extend its network beyond the former Zain coverage areas, Commercial Director concluded.


Similar statements were also delivered by the personalities including the Chief of Staff, Office of the President, Kelfala Marrah, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Dr. Richard Konteh, NATCOM Boss, Siray Timbo, and a host of other distinguished personalities.
