In Sierra Leone, Kono Bye-Election Campaign Kicks off

Official campaign for the forthcoming Kono District Council bye-election has commenced in Kono, eastern Sierra Leone, on Monday 22nd November 2010.

Kono District Electoral Officer, Momoh M. Kanneh, yesterday told the Awareness Times that the contesting political parties have agreed on NECís campaign calendar. ďThe campaign calendar was arranged and signed by all parties concerned, and it is designed in such a way that the process is free of violence,Ē Kanneh explained.


According to the calendar, the Peopleís Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) commenced yesterday 22nd¬†November 2010 in Constituency 22. This constituency comprised Kamaya and Upper Gbenteh Chiefdoms, and the Wards therein include Wards 65, 66 and 67.


The main opposition Sierra Leone Peopleís Party (SLPP) started its campaign yesterday in Constituency 24, Wards 73, 74, 75 and 76.


The aforementioned Wards and Constituency are in the Nimikoro Chiefdom.


Lei, Toli, Sima, Mafindor and Gbaneh Kandor Chiefdoms were yesterday occupied for campaign by the All Peopleís Congress (APC) party and the area under review would be the APC campaign area until November 24 2010. The aforementioned Chiefdoms are in Constituency 27 and the Wards therein are 77, 86, 87 and 88.

Commencing yesterday and onto the 24th November 2010, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), campaigns in Constituency 26 in the Soa, Gbane and Upper Tankoro Chiefdom.

The Wards therein include 82, 83, 84 and 85.


According to the NEC District Officer, the two major political parties are no close to each other for the entire process so as to avert clashing. ďWhilst the APC is campaigning near the Guinea border, the SLPP is campaigning at the Tongo field end,Ē he explained.


It was also agreed that campaign ends on the 8th December 2010, whilst the 9th and 10th December 2010 has been slated as the cooling off period, where all political parties would use the radio airwaves to preach peace.


The election would be conducted on the 11th December 2010.

The candidates for the various political parties are as follows: APC Diana Finda Konormani, SLPP Matturi Safoa Lee, PMDC Unisa Emmanuel Samba and NDA Rachael Yongai.
