Eight Presidential aspirants for the highly coveted crown of Presidential aspirant for Sierra Leone’s main opposition SLPP party, have paid to the Party the whopping sum of Le400,000,000 (Four Hundred Million Leones) as their candidate fees in full; which if added to the remaining fifteen candidates own individual Le10,000,000 deposits, now makes a whopping sum of Le550,000,000 (Five Hundred and Fifty Million Leones) that is now in the possession of the SLPP.

This was revealed to Awareness Times by SLPP National Treasurer Joe Kallon who named the eight candidates as Dr. Anthony Soyei, Lawyer Alpha Timbo, Maada Bio, Usman Boie-Kamara, Andrew Keili, Emmanuel Grant, Obai Kabia and Alpha Wurie.

With less than two weeks for the deadline of December 31st 2010, it is expected that other leading contenders like Dr. Kadi Sesay and Mr. Momodu Koroma will be making their balance payments thus swelling the party’s coffers even more.

Speaking to Awareness Times yesterday from Kenema where he had gone to attend the funeral of Mr. Alfred Sandy, an SLPP stalwart, the SLPP Leader John Benjamin said he was satisfied with the level playing field his leadership has continued to provide which has inspired all the candidates to trust that the March 5th 2011 elections for SLPP Presidential candidate will be free, fair and credible.

“There is no candidate who will say John Benjamin is supporting any one over the other and I have warned all Executive members to follow my lead,” Benjamin assured over the phone.
