In Sierra Leone, IPAM Student Killed in Gruesome Accident

A gruesome accident that occurred in the afternoon hours of Monday 24th January 2011 at the central business district of Freetown has claimed the life of a final year female student of the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) and left several others seriously injured and hospitalized.

Rebecca Chukwu Kamara, who is also an intern at the Rokel Commercial Bank in Freetown, met her untimely death, when a delivery van with registration number ABY 576, lost control and crushed her to death.

The incident took place at the densely populated area of Garrison Street and the vehicle in question was coming from Gloucester Street when it developed ‘break failure’. The struggling driver diverted the vehicle’s direction from Gloucester Street to Garrison Street where it collided with two vehicles and in the event hitting several petty traders and passersby before it finally halted.

The driver was apprehended and handed over to the police and the matter is being investigated.

The corpse of the deceased was convened to the Mortuary of the Connaught Hospital.

Two pupils of the Saint Edwards Primary School, Alhaji Thaimu Sesay and Abu Bakarr Sesay, both of whom sustained minor injuries were treated at the Connaught Hospital, whilst others including Foday Kanu, Alfred Mansaray and Aminata Koroma who sustained serious injurious are presently
hospitalized at the Emergency Hospital.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports have it that the vehicle seriously damaged a pupil of the Akibo-Betts Primary School, who later died at the hospital.
