The House of Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone on Thursday 21st March 2013 unanimously approved Professor Emeritus Patrick Monty Jones as an Ambassador-at-Large of the Republic of Sierra Leone with plenipotentiary powers to represent His Excellency the President. Prof. Monty Jones is also a Special Adviser to the Head of State.

Presenting the nominee to the Members of Parliament, the Majority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Sheku B.B. He said the professor excellently responded to questions posed to him by the panel and therefore deserves to be approved for the said position.

Hon. Claude Kamanda of the All Peoples Congress (APC) party in Parliament said it was prudent on the part of President Koroma to appoint Prof. Jones as Ambassador at-Large.

He said that the appointment of the fine gentleman was a pleasant surprise to many Sierra Leoneans and did not raise any eyebrows anywhere.

Hon. Patricia Umu Browne of the APC said President Koroma did not make any mistake in appointing Prof. Jones as according to her, Prof. Jones is well known for excellent research work in Sierra Leone, in Africa and indeed in many other parts of the world.

She revealed that NERICA Rice which was discovered by the professor is remarkably doing well in many parts of the world for its short time productivity. She therefore urged her colleague MPs to approve the presidential nominee.

Hon. Dr. Bernadette Lahai, Minority Leader of the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) who is also a trained agriculturist, described Prof. Jones as one of best researchers ever in that field. She said Sierra Leoneans will always be proud of him. She disclosed that Prof. Jones has a very rich CV, particularly in Agriculture.

She used the forum to appeal to Prof. Jones in his capacity as Adviser to the President and Ambassador at-Large,to do more than what he has done in the field of Agriculture now that he was in the field of politics.

Speaking further, APCs Hon. S.B.B. Dumbuya said although Prof. Jones had been his junior at the St. Edwards Secondary School many years ago, he has proven better at achievement than his seniors. He described Jones as a national and international celebrity in terms of intellectualism.

At this point, the professor was unanimously approved by the entire honorable house to loud acclaim.
