PUBLIC NOTICE

SIM/UIM CARD REGISRATION ULTIMATUM

Freetown, 1st July, 2015Ö
The National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM) hereby urges Telecom Operators in the country to fully comply with the SIM/UIM Card Registration Regulations of 2009, which oblige service providers to duly register their respective subscribers within two weeks of the publication of this notice or face appropriate regulatory measures as provided for by law.

The Commission is seriously concerned about the widespread unethical and criminal use of unregistered SIM and UIM cards by unscrupulous members of the public who are bent on causing havoc and cannot be easily identified. Some of the complaints arising from this unlawful practice have been the subject matter of police investigations, but much has not been achieved due to the fact that the identity of the defaulters remains unknown.

In addition to the immoral and criminal use of unregistered SIM and UIM cards, is also the grave implications posed on national security; the consequences of which will serve only the devilís interest.

The Commission therefore demands full compliance with the above-mentioned regulations by ensuring that existing and potential subscribers to all networks are duly registered and can be identified, when necessary. The deadline for full compliance with the said regulations shall be 13th July, 2015 and the Commission will embark on robust monitoring exercises to ensure compliance.

Finally, the Commission wishes to encourage members of the public to also play a positive role in ensuring that their service providers register their SIM/UIM cards upon purchase as a civic responsibility to the State and the community. The purpose of the regulations is to positively benefit society, rather than otherwise as may be misconstrued.
