Sierra Leone News : Scholarship for 380 Vulnerable Pupil, 30 University Students by Hon Salam

The Honourable Member of Parliament of Constituency 101 in Western Urban, Hon. Abdul Salam Kanu together with Petro Jetty has on Sunday 14th May 2017, doled out scholarship to three hundred and eighty 380 primary, secondary pupils and 30 university students at Hotel 5/10 in Freetown.


In presenting the scholarship, Hon Kanu said the scholarship is for vulnerable pupils and university students in his constituency.


He informed that every year, he has been providing scholarship for 100 primary and secondary school going pupils personally at Marie Vandy Secondary School.


He added that last year alone he donated 300 furniture to school and that he will lobby for more scholarship.


He said that each pupil will received the sum of two hundred thousand Leones, two million Leones each to students at the university and one million six hundred thousand Leones each to students in other tertiary institutions.


He disclosed that Petro Jetty is owned by the people of constituency 101 because the company will be manned after 25 years, highlighting that petro jetty should be paying 25% to government but they have reduced it to 10% because of the cooperate social responsibility they are doing in the community.


He said during the Ebola outbreak, Petro Jetty provided food for quarantine homes at his constituency which help him and his constituency greatly at that pointing time.


Office Manager, Petro Jetty Sylvester Malay said they have been operating at kissy dockyard for four years and they have a good working relationship with the Member of Parliament and even the community people.


He said good working relationship is very key to them in the company policy.


He added that when they started operation in that community, it was very difficult for them at that time especially during the Ebola outbreak but now, thing have changed for better as they have partner with Member of parliament in order to develop and improve the lives of their constituents.


He added that for the four years that they have been operating in that community, they have done a lot developmental activities especially in providing scholarship for pupils, water and fishing boat to the people of dockyard so that they can get their daily bread.


He said that the community which the company is operating is not safe because they are exploring Gas and petrol and because of this, they have done community sensitization program for boat not to ply that rout when they are discharge.


He added that they take care of their basic needs in the community and they have been doing that for the couple of years that they have been worked in that community and they will continue doing that for them.
