Sierra Leone News : 50/50 Group and OSIWA Trains 50 Correctional Officers

The 50/50 Group in Partnership with Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) on Thursday 1st June 2017 started a two-day Training workshop at the Group’s headquarters, OAU Drive, Tower Hill, Freetown. The training is titled; Breaking Barriers: Empowering Female Correctional Officers in Leadership Skills for Political Participation.

 

Addressing newsmen at their edifice, the founder of 50/50 Group, Dr. Nemata Majeks-Walker disclosed that, 50/50 is a non-partisan campaign for more women in politics and public life through training and advocacy, and has succeeded in placing women’s representation on the political agenda in Sierra Leone, as part of its commitment to promoting the equitable participation of women in governance.

Explaining the aim of the two-day Training of Trainers’ workshop, President of 50/50 Group, Dr. Fatou Taqi said “The aim of this training is to empower Female Correctional Officers with skills to participate in Leadership processes all over Sierra Leone with a view to increasing the number of women from All Works of Life in leadership and decision-making positions.   The organization will also sensitize women about their right to participate in politics through radio and TV discussions throughout the country and in the various local languages”.

 

Dr. Taqi added that the outputs of these will be measured through follow-up work that will be conducted to ascertain whether there is an increase in the number of uniformed officers who participate in politics and leadership activities compared to previous years.

 

Director of Training, Sierra Leone Correctional Services, Ahmed Turay thanked 50/50 Group and OSIWA for offering the capacity building training for the 50 female correctional officers across the country. He however appealed to the group to replicate such training for men too in the correctional service.
