The pro-PAOPA faction of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) has issued a gag order on its members which is similar to the one that was done during the ruthless and barbaric military junta days of Julius Maada Bio, Kandeh Yumkella and John Benjamin.
It can be recalled that the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) was a brutal and heartless military government within which had been found the likes of three of the topmost contenders for the opposition presidential ticket; namely Julius Maada Bio, John Oponjo Benjamin and Kandeh Yumkella. They ruled the country with an iron fist that clamped down on all the democratic freedoms which had been instituted by the APC Government they had overthrown. One of the most striking suppressions were the decrees regularly issued to curtail freedom of speech.
In a clear show of what they will bring back if ever elected into office, the Bio-led PAOPA (by force) faction of the SLPP, within Kenema District executive, has in a public notice dated 1st August, 2017, clamped down on its party members.
The Notice said when party members exercise their freedom of speech to engage the media, it is tantamount to reducing the dignity and respect of SLPP, according to the current 'governors' of SLPP.
As a result, the head of the administration of the SLPP in Kenema, who belongs to PAOPA faction, is in the same public notice cautioning all radio stations in the Kenema district that managers are warned not to air any discussions or public notices about the activities of the party without his permission. This is exactly what NPRC used to do when they sanctioned all print materials to first face scrutiny by NPRC junta boys like Yumkella, Bio and Benjamin.
In an even more brazen show of suppression, the public notice warns of unspecified punishments for SLPP members who breach the NPRC Styled decree.
As a result of actions by the SLPP PAOPA members in Kenema District, many who spoke to the Awareness Times Newspaper said the SLPP is now duplicating the censure of free speech by the NPRC junta of which key members like Maada Bio, Kandeh Yumkella and John Benjamin were architects of.
Meanwhile, below is the complete release issued by the SLPP.
