2012 presidential candidate of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) Maada Bio and the former chairman and leader of the party, John Oponjo Benjamin (fondly called JOB) are now to pay a non-refundable candidature fee of Le 120,000,000 (One hundred and twenty million Leones) into a special SLPP account that would be set up by the party to enable them contest for the flagbearership of the party.
This decision comes after the Sierra Leone Gazette on Monday 31st July,2017, published the rules and regulations for the conduct of the SLPP presidential candidate elections. This rules and regulations in article III (b) specifically talks about the candidature fees as criteria for the SLPP candidates who are vying for the party’s presidential ticket for the March 2018 presidential election.
Both Maada Bio and JOB are now seen as front runners to clinch the party’s heavy post. Over the past months, there has been serious tension between the two SLPP heavyweights, with JOB insistently accusing Maada Bio of fueling violent within the opposition party. These allegations have always been denied by Maada Bio.
Many who spoke to Awareness Times Newspaper said the candidature fee has the tendency of shying away potential aspirants who wants to contest for the SLPP flagbearership position. However, JOB himself has promised to meet with his team and react appropriately to the candidature fees demanded by the SLPP executive, whilst a Maada Bio supporter who spoke to Awareness Times Newspaper promised Bio is ready to pay the money.
Awareness Times Newspaper will bring John Benjamin’s side in our tomorrow’s edition.
