In Sierra Leone, UNFPA & Finance Ministry in 2-days Population Forum

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development have on Thursday 28th October 2010 at the Saint Edwards secondary school compound embarked in a two days forum to partner with religious organizations to build consensus in advocating for population issues, stopping gender based violence, women empowerment and maternal health.
Speaking at the occasion, Haja Afsatu Olayinka Kabba said it is not an easy task to bring people from various backgrounds to talk about sensitive issues but that the issues on the floor were of such importance to all regardless of one’s religious, social or cultural background that they will always be a common bond to draw human being of various cadres together. She said one of the greatest assets Sierra Leone has is Religious tolerance and this enables people from different religions to sit together as one to discuss gender issues.
Also making a Statement, Revd. D.M. SPEEK, Chairman of the National Christian network of population development said it is indeed a privilege to be part of the Forum and promised that Christians will work with Muslims to enhance the visibility of the issues being challenged.
The Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Samura Kamara in his short statement, expressed his gratitude to the organizers of the forum whose advocacy he said has led to the recognition at the highest levels of the need to address the issues under review. He commended UNFPA for their faith-based initiatives.
